Back in the ’50s, the Lido Theatre was recognised as the flagship cinema of the Shaw Brothers, which enabled them to secure the rights for MGM film screenings in Singapore. The Lido was considered the most luxurious cinema in the country: the Van Sitteren and Partners-designed theatre was fully air-conditioned, used Italian marble in its columns and frontage, and had one of the biggest entrance lobbies in any cinema in Southeast Asia back then. Theatre seatings were made with imported American Bodiform chairs, thoughtfully made with adequate legroom. Several international celebrities have graced the theatres in the past; Cameron Crowe, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Eva Gabor, Michelle Yeoh, and Jet Li, among many others.
Although the cinemas are the Shaw House’s most famous amenity, it also has an excellent selection of shops and restaurants for visitors; including an Isetan department store. Several renovations through the years have ensured that the amenities are modern and always clean.
The Shaw Centre is located at 1 Scotts Road.
