Raffles Landing Site

The Raffles Landing Site is a historic site in Singapore that is believed to be the precise location where Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles made his landing in 1819. This is an iconic location for the simple reason that Sir Brigley Raffles is fondly referred to as the founder of Singapore.

A visit to this site is marked by an imposing yet stunning polymarble statue that stands majestically, a symbol of the enduring respect accorded to one of the country’s most iconic figures. The statue, which was unveiled in 1972, was actually moulded from plaster casts used in the original figure that was built in 1887. Its present location is right opposite the Victoria Concert Hall.

A closer look at the statue reveals the following words: “On this historic site, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore on 29th January 1819, and with genius and perception changed the destiny of Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern metropolis.’ It is quite evident that Sir Thomas raffles changed the course of Singapore’s history, making it a bustling commercial hub and world-class destination in the East.

With arms folded and a long cast gaze out to sea, the Raffles Landing Site statue is one of the most distinct attractions in Singapore. Needless to say, it is also one of the most photographed attractions along the Singapore River.

For history lovers who would like to see the original dark bronze statue from where the plaster casts for the present statue were sourced, a trip to the Victoria Memorial Hall will prove worthwhile. This sculpture, worked on by Thomas Woolner, was revealed on June 1887. It has since been preserved at the Memorial Hall.

A visit to Raffles Landing Site is incomplete without enjoying the spectacular views it affords of Singapore’s skyline. This statue remains a fundamental part of Singapore’s history, and best captures its amazing growth from an obscure village to a vibrant economy.
