National Stadium

The National Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Kallang, and one of the most prominent features in the island’s sporting and entertainment scene. The present stadium was opened in 2014, and was constructed to replace the previous one by the same name.

One of the most amazing features about this stadium is its domed structure that has a retractable roof. The dome, which measures 310 metres across, has a roof that can be opened or closed depending on the weather. What’s more, the stadium’s seating on the lowest tiers are configurable to suit different sports.

This is an incredible feature because it makes the stadium a unique one of its kind as it is designed to host different sporting events, thanks to its customisable structure. These sporting events include cricket, athletics, football and rugby.

In addition to these events, the retractable seating configuration makes it possible to host world class entertainment events. It comes as no surprise therefore that National Stadium has played host to global icons in the entertainment industry including Madonna, One Direction, Mariah Carey and Coldplay.

Significant sporting events in the past include the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, the World Club 10s Rugby as well as a number of friendlies between renowned football teams. The stadium’s capacity varies, owing to the different configurations, but can typically hold up to 55,000 people.

The National Stadium has also played host to the National Day Parade, a national ceremony that commemorates the island’s independence and is usually marked by a parade. On such events, the retractable roof is used as a giant projector screen to show images of the country’s flag.

Wedding photography is also popular at the stadium, so those interested should email [email protected] at least 10 working days prior to proposed date and pay the licencing fee.

The stadium is located above the Stadium MRT Station, and can be accessed on the Circle Line with trains arriving every five minutes. Other nearby stations include the Kallang MRT Station as well as the Mountbatten MRT Station, both of which are within a 10-minute walk. Taxi stands are also conveniently located near the stadium, with bus stops along the sports complex for easy access.
