Ward drew his inspiration from Old Bailey, one of London’s Courthouse, which explains the stark similarities between the two buildings. The magnificent design of the stately columns is carved out of gypsum plaster, alongside symbolic features that represent law and order. One figure is representative of Mercy while the other represents the Law. Other figures at Old Supreme Court Building are symbols of Prosperity and Gratitude.
One of the key attractions at the building is the Rotunda Library that is located right at the centre. With its intricate workmanship, distinct panelling and unique cornices, this law library is impossible to miss. The central courtyard is the perfect place to unwind and take a few minutes to enjoy this magnificent attraction.
Today, the building houses the National Gallery of Singapore which oversees the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore. It houses both a permanent collection as well as special exhibitions of works throughout the year, all accessible to the general public.
So come over to the Old Supreme Court Building to view one of Singapore’s most historic buildings.
